Spoiler tags

Hide a word, a phrase, or a whole block behind a cover that opens on click.

A spoiler covers its content until the reader clicks. The text is still in the message; the cover is a visual state, not a lock. Use it for a reveal, such as a plot point, a solution, or a gift, not for layout.

Inline

Wrap the text in two bars on each side. The markers can sit in the middle of a sentence, so you can hide one word or one phrase. The cover works on a word, a phrase, or a whole line; the bars mark only the span you choose. Text outside the bars stays visible, and the bars themselves disappear when the message sends.

You type
The final boss is ||the gardener||.
Discord shows
The final boss is the gardener.
Only the text between the bars is covered.

A whole block

The same pair of bars can wrap several lines. Put the opening bars before the first line and the closing bars after the last one; the cover then spans the whole passage.

You type
||The surprise guest is
arriving at eight||

Both lines sit under one cover because the bars wrap the whole block.

A link can sit inside the bars like any other text. The reader sees the cover first, then the link after a click. The opening and closing bars can share a line with the text, or sit on their own lines around it.

With other formatting

Bold, italic, and the other markers still work inside a spoiler. Discord parses the inner span first, then places the result under the cover. Put the bars outside the styling when you want the whole styled span covered.

You type
||**spoiler** with *style*||

The inner markers are parsed first; the cover hides the result.

Inside inline code or a fenced block, the bars are ordinary characters. Code already switches off formatting, so no spoiler forms there.

Not a privacy tool

A spoiler is a visual cover, not a security boundary. The text stays in the message, and anyone can click it, copy it, or read it with a client that ignores the cover. The cover is drawn by the client, so a modified client can skip it entirely. Assistive technology can still reach the text. Keep passwords, tokens, and personal data out of spoilers.

Watch out

Keep the bars tight against the text. A space immediately inside || can stop the spoiler from forming in some clients, leaving the bars visible. Type ||text||, not || text ||. A single bar on either side is not enough; the marker is always a pair. Check the character too: a broken bar or a slash is not a pipe. If you need to show the bars as text, put them in inline code.
